New Rooftop Greenhouse at Davis Hall

Owner: Dept. of Design and Construction of the City Universtiy of New York
Location: Lehman College, Bronx, NY
Construction Cost: 1.15 Million

The Greenhouse is a 2,200 square foot aluminum and glass structure with a link to the main building at the fourth floor roof that is utilized as a potting shed. The Greenhouse was provided within the fourth floor roof area of 3,800 square feet surrounded by a 42" high parapet. The roof onto which the structure has been installed was structurally reinforced with tubular structural steel to increase the allowable live load from 40psf to 100psf. Built-up roofing, flashing and rigid and tapered insulation was provided between the Greenhouse and the parapet walls.

The Greenhouse is divided into eight "growth rooms" four of which on each side of a central corridor. The Greenhouse and Potting Shed have complete climate control relating to each individual space that include heating and humidification. The system also ties in the ventilating sash. The project was completed in 1990. The total project cost was $1,070,000.
