Architectural Design Services for New Firehouse Engine Company 71
Owner: NYC Department of Design and Construction
Location: Bronx, NY
Construction Cost: $2.35 Million
HAKS designed this new firehouse at the corner of East 155th Street and Melrose Avenue in the Bronx. The firehouse was oriented so that the apparatus room with fire fighting vehicles would have immediate access to the street intersection, thus would be able to go in any direction.
The building is a 2-story, steel framed, brick clad structure containing a three-bay apparatus room dimensioned to include hook and ladder equipment. Operable skylights on the roof of the building help ventilate the space in the summer months and reduce electric lighting needs by providing natural light, thus helping to conserve energy. Additional ventilation for the apparatus room is provided on the south side of the building by exhaust fans through an expansive line of louvers. Other interior space includes offices for the Company Chief and Assistant Chief, dormitory/sleeping quarters and lockers for the firemen, lunch room, kitchen and recreation room.
Mechanical and electrical facilities are concentrated in the basement of the building, including the boiler, main electric service and distribution. Air conditioning equipment is on the roof. Individual window-type air conditioning units are provided on the first floor of the north side of the building.
The firehouse was formerly designated Engine Company 41 but is now Engine Company 71, Ladder Company 55, Battalion 14 and Searchlight Unit.
