Replacement of Water Mains and Abandoned High-Pressure Water Mains in Canal St. Area, New York, NY

Owner: New York City DDC
Location: New York, NY
Construction Cost: $ 8.7 million

HAKS provided Construction Supervision Services for the replacement of water mains in the highly commercial Canal Street area of Manhattan.

Work included removing and disposing of high pressure water mains, hydrants, hydrant valves, rims and covers.  New hydrants and ductile iron pipe was installed in diameters varying from 6 to 24 inches.  Additionally, a section of 36'' steel trunk main was installed at Canal Street & Bowery (approx. 450 LF), a portion of which crossed over a subway roof.  House service connections were also made. Where necessary, test pits were excavated in order to uncover underground and hidden facilities.  Hydrants were protected by installing fenders.  Trees were pruned to improve sight lines and access.  Because of the busy commercial nature of this location, work was performed at night between 9:00 PM and 5:00 AM.  Only one or two lanes were taken out of service at any one time to complete the work.  Shut-downs were often complex involving several blocks in certain instances.

HAKS' scope included managing the entire project and ensuring that all work was completed in compliance with the contract requirements.  Special emphasis was placed on safely controlling traffic as work progressed.  HAKS chaired monthly progress meetings and was responsible for monitoring work progress and coordinating efforts with local agencies, public groups and utilities in this very congested location.  HAKS was also responsible for maintaining daytime contact with NYCDEP to resolve field issues, processing change orders, payment requisitions and final project close out.
