Construction Inspection Services, Queens Midtown Tunnel Ventilation Buildings and Emergency Garage Facilities

Owner: MTA Bridges and Tunnels
Location: Queens and Manhattan, NY
Construction Cost: $3 million

HAKS provided construction inspection services for ventilation buildings and emergency garage facilities at the Queens Midtown Tunnel.  The work involved the replacement of the face brick, fascia spandrel blocks and the coping stones on the roof levels at both ventilation buildings.  Brick color and size had to match the existing brick at all locations to ensure the repaired areas would blend seamlessly with the existing brick work.  The concrete fascia walls were fabricated and a retarding process was utilized that gave the blocks a granite-like weathered appearance that matched the existing blocks.  The coping stones also had to be specially manufactured to ensure color matching, as the existing coping stones had weathered.  Work involved an in-depth review of sample submissions from various manufacturers of shop drawings, visits to fabrication plants to ensure the final product matched what was detailed in the approved drawings, review and approval of shop drawings, and installation of the same.

The construction work for this project included:

  • Roof replacement
  • Window replacement
  • Asbestos abatement
  • Lead-based paint removal
  • Application of corrosion inhibitive coating to structural steel
  • Terra-cotta replacement
  • Overhead concrete rehabilitation
  • Demolition of shear walls and brick parapet
  • Installation of fan damper
  • Replacement of overhead roll-up doors
