Resident Engineering Inspection Services for the Reconstruction of the Flatbush Avenue Bridge over Belt Parkway

Owner: New York City Department of Transportation
Location: Brooklyn, NY
Construction Cost: $5 million

HAKS provided construction inspection services during the rehabilitation of the Flatbush Avenue Bridge.

This bridge spans six lanes of the Belt Parkway in Brooklyn. Project work included removal of the superstructure and demolition of the upper portions of both abutments and the center pier. These upper portions were reconstructed and repairs were made to remaining portions of the substructure. The retaining walls and stone facing were also repaired. A new multi-girder super structure with a concrete cast-in-place deck was constructed. A new gas line was installed. The existing water main was replaced. A new lighting system was installed and asbestos abatement was accomplished at electrical and telephone ducts. All this work was accomplished in three stages with two lanes of traffic continuously maintained in each direction.

HAKS' managed the entire project. Our engineers ensured that all work was completed according to contract requirements. Special emphasis was placed on safely controlling traffic during each construction phase. This work was accomplished according to the approved MPT Plan. HAKS ensured that signage, striping and other traffic control measures were appropriate for each situation. HAKS chaired monthly progress meetings, monitored the work schedule, coordinated with local agencies, public groups and private utility companies and worked on change orders, payment requisitions and the project close out.
